The Mini Bondorew Bucktail

Updated: Jul 1, 2019

Simple, sparse, and small, the Mini Bondorew Bucktail is an impressionist fly that looks like everything and nothing. Its sparseness gives the fly the same translucent quality present in most small baitfish (think bay anchovies, peanut bunker, juvenile herring), and its colors pop ensuring that the fish will see your offering. Like all bucktail flies, be sure to experiment with size and silhouette.

This fly makes a great addition to a multi-fly rig. I like fishing it during those times when there are no visible signs of baitfish, but you suspect there are some stripers in the water. I tie a few off droppers leading to Gartside Gurgler and see if I can drum up some action.

A Mini Bondorew Bucktail tied so sparse you can read Easter Fly Fishing Magazine through it.

Recipe

Hook: Mustad 34007, size 4 - 1

Thread: White

Tail: Sparse clump of chartreuse bucktail

Throat: Sparse clump of white bucktail

Wing: Sparse clump of light blue bucktail

Tying Tips

Less is more when it comes to this fly. Tie it sparse and let the water do the rest.
