Fishing With S.K.S Adventures

Design Your Ideal Outing

Loring 2.JPG

When a client wants to fish with us the first step is to co-design an outing that custom fits the client’s experience level, availability, and fishing interests.

New to fly-fishing? We’ll incorporate a beginners casting lesson into the outing before hitting the water. A seasoned angler, but new to the East Bay? We’ll leverage your existing fly fishing skills to design an experience that will both challenge and introduce you to this wonderful fishery. Have children? We’ll keep the outing fun and educational with nature walks and wildlife lessons.

Target Species and Locations

S. K. S Adventures specializes in targeting Striped Bass (Morone Saxatilis) in Rhode Island's East Bay using fly rods. We primarily fish in the towns of Barrington, Warren, and Bristol. In the future we hope to expand our offerings to include outings in Middleton, Newport, South County, Little Compton, and Block Island.

For novice or youth fly fisherman we also offer outings on local ponds and lakes. Most freshwater ponds and lakes contain ample populations of pan fish and bass, both of which are excellent target species for beginner anglers.

We pride ourselves on seeking to meet our clients' interests and needs. We are interested in guiding clients on a variety of waters for a variety of species. Contact us to see if S.K.S Adventures can guide you on your local fishery.

Once we have designed your ideal outing, costs are calculated using an hourly per person rate of $25/ hour per adult, $15 for youth (15 and under).

*Only those wielding a rod or using equipment are charged. If you want to accompany a friend or loved one you can always watch free of charge!

Seasons, Tides and Times of Day

Striped Bass are a migratory fish that travel up and down the eastern seaboard with the seasons. The timing of the Striped Bass migration varies year to year, but smaller striped bass, affectionately called "schoolies", begin to arrive in Rhode Island towards late April. By early May these schoolies make their way into the Narraganset Bay in search of warmer water. By mid-May larger "keeper" sized bass begin to move into the Narraganset Bay.

From mid- May to late June Striped Bass remain in the Narraganset bay, feeding on a variety of bait fish. This is the best time to target these fish and therefore we often encourage clients to schedule outings during this time frame. By July the water in the Narraganset Bay becomes too warm and Striped Bass return to the open ocean to seek cooler waters in Northern New England.

Fishing for Striped Bass is tide and time dependent, with the best fishing occurring during low light. When designing your outing with S.K.S Adventures we will work with you to schedule an outing that aligns with your schedule and optimal fishing conditions.

Our Fishing Philosophy and Style

Our fishing style is strongly influenced by the traditional ways of Striped Bass fly-fishing made famous by the likes of Kenney Abrames, Ray Bondorew, Harold Gibbs and others. Though Striped Bass can be an aggressive fish, apt to strike a fast moving fly, they are typically much more efficient in their feeding behavior. Striped Bass seek current and allow moving water to bring their food to them, just like trout or salmon living in a river.

On a typical S.K.S Adventures outing you will learn how to present flies to Striped Bass, using the current to make the fly seem like "one of the naturals". Big fish are smart fish, and they don't want to work harder than they have to!

About Sam Somera

S.K.S Adventures is a one-man-show operated by Sam Somera. Sam has been fly fishing and fly tying since the age of 10 and has since become a fly-fishing writer and blogger in his free time.

Sam grew up fly fishing on the Saluda River in South Carolina, but when his family moved to Rhode Island in 2012, he quickly became immersed in the many fly fishing opportunities of the East Bay. Sam has now been fly fishing the East Bay for 7 years and recently had an article about the area published in Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine.

A graduate of Barrington High School ‘15, Sam completed a senior project about fly fishing guides in Rhode Island. Now Sam has a strong desire to share the bounties of the Narraganset Bay with its people.

Sam is a graduate of Syracuse University '19 where he dual-majored in History and Social Studies Education. As Sam embarks on a career in teaching he hopes to use guiding as way to continue "teaching" throughout the summer months. With the Narraganset Bay as his classroom, Sam is excited to share his local waters with novice and experienced anglers alike.
