Fishing Report: May 12

Tonight's fishing was a testament to the power of one more cast. Despite the wind, rain, and frigid temperatures I started the evening at 6:30 pm hoping that the stormy weather would provide an opportunity to catch bass without burning the midnight oil. The first 45 minutes of fishing was brutal. In fact, it wasn't long until the wind and rain started turning my hands numb, forcing me to seek the warmth of the car heater.

This tidal pond will usually produce on an outgoing tide, but only if you can feel your hands...

After a brief period of incubation, I went to Spot B to see if there was any action. I didn't see any signs of activity, and I seriously considered going home, but the car heater had rejuvenated me enough to run to Spot C and wet a line. Unfortunately Spot C bore no fruit, but with the sun setting and the wind dying down I decided to go back to Spot B in attempt to salvage the evening.

Wet fly swings, greased line swings, dead drifts, strip retrieves...I tried them all. Alas, not even a tap.

As I waded into Spot B things did not look promising. No silversides, no grass shrimp, no rising fish, no nothing. Just the rain and darkness. However, looks can be deceiving. I was able to conjure up three schoolie bass, each on a wetfly swing, before I decided to head out. The first two were caught on a Lemon Lime Ray's Fly (will share a post soon). The last fish was caught on a Storm Cloud Big Eelie (again, will share a post soon). The fish weren't huge, maybe 20-22 inches, but they put up a good fight.

I caught three, but only photographed one. Taking fish pics with an iPhone can be a bit of a hassle. Nevertheless, I'm committed to getting better for the purposes of this site.

The conditions were tough, but like so often is the case, persistence and a willingness to "gut it out" payed off. With the coming of the full moon and some milder weather, fishing should get better and better by the day, peaking during the full moon on Sunday, May 19. If you are interested in booking a guided outing, this week is a great time to do so. Visit the Guided Outings page for more information.
